REPORT 2007 The Education Department realised the following projects in 2007: E X H I B I T I O N S JOHN PAUL II IN THE PHOTOGRAPHY OF WOJCIECH MILEWSKI From April to June 2007 in the National Shrine of God's Providence one could view the photographic exhibition of the apostolic visits of John Paul II in Poland. The author of the work, Wojciech Milewski has been engaged in artistic photography since 1957, has taken part in over 400 exhibitions at home and abroad. He was been honored with many awards. PHOTOGRAPHIC PORTRAITS OF FATHER JAN TWARDOWSKI Exhibition of Małgorzata Domańska presenting photographs of Father Twardowski taken 6 months before his death in his flat in Krakowskie Przedmieście. The inauguration of the exhibition was a part of the framework of the second edition of Meetings with the Friend of the Ladybirds. BETWEEN HEAVEN AND EARTH - JOHN PAUL II UNDER LOT WINGS From July to October, in the National Shrine of God's Providence an exhibiton of photograms of Andrzej Pawliszewski documenting a meeting between the Holy Father at the Polish Airlines LOT on 13 June, 1999, could be viewed. I wanted everybody to know how moving this meeting was for us. We hosted the Pope in the hangar, we had him just for ourselves, says the author of the photographs, Andrzej Pawliszewski. The exhibition also included the photographs from the farewell moments just before the Pope's departure to Rome from the Cracow Airport and the photos taken during the special flight to Rome. BARDS OF THE GREAT JOHN PAUL In connection with the anniversary of the death of John Paul II, the Institute organised a poetical competition for pupils from Junior High Schools and High Schools named after the Pope. The objective of the competiton was to compose a ballad about the history of the Pontificate of John Paul II. Apart from the special awards for the laureates, the participants received a special edition of the competition anthology Bards of the Great John Paul - Young poets about the Pontificate of John Paul II. JOHN PAUL II RETURNS TO HOMELAND Inauguration of the exhibition took place during celebration of the so called Papal Days. The exhibition presents photographs of five prominent photographers, who documented the Holy Father's meetings with compatriots during the subsequent pilgrimages to his Homeland, namely Andrzej Pawliszewski, Ryszard Rzepecki, Wojciech Kryński, Janusz Rosikoń and Jan Morek. 28th ANNIVERSARY OF BISHOP ANOINMENT OF HIS EMINENCE JOZEF CARDINAL GLEMP PRIMATE OF POLAND The exhibition of Ryszard Rzepecki's photographs documenting the ceremony of bishop anointment of his Eminence Józef Cardinal Glemp, Primate of Poland.
C O M P E T I T I O N S THE FINAL OF THE COMPETITION TODAY IN BETHLEHEM Awards presentation to the laureates of photographic competition for Mazovian schools named after John Paul II. FINALS OF VI EDITION OF COMPETITION MY MISSIONARY SCHOOL FRIEND On 2 June, 2007 the grand finals for the VI edition of the competition My missionary school friend took place. The participants presented during 10 minutes their exposure of their missionary achievements. The presentations were followed by a ceremonial Eucharist led by Archbishop Kazimierz Nycz. After the Holy Mass, the Gala Final started during which there was a presentation of the Missionary Apostolate of Handicapped Children of Little Ania from Zielonki and the competition laureates were awarded. MAZOVIAN PAPAL COMPETITION Aiming at getting young people interested in the systematic learning about the John Paul II heritage and trying to encourage them to take responsibility for their own youth in the light of the John Paul II teaching, the Institute commissioned by the Mazovian Educational Curator undertook the initiative to organise a Mazovian Papal Competition. The competition laureates and finalists, apart from awards, will receive special rights given by the Mazovian Educational Curator. E V E N T S INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL OF FILMS AND CATHOLIC MULTIMEDIA - NIEPOKALANÓW 2007 Between 23 - 27 May, 2007 in Niepokalanów the XXII International Film and Multimedia Festival took place. The Institute funded one of the special awards. It was awarded to Wanda Różycka-Zborowska, the author of the film I am counting on you. It is a documentary, presenting the continuation of the thoughts of John Paul II in the teachings of Benedict XVI. The film was also acknowledged by the competition jury , gaining first prize in the category " documentary film". FATHER TWARDOWSKI FOR CHILDREN - CHILDREN FOR FATHER TWARDOWSKI. On the anniversary of the birthday of Father Jan Twardowski which falls on Children's Day the Institute of Pope John Paul II organised a spectacle, in which children from Warsaw schools acquainted themselves with the compositions of Father Jan Twardowski. The musical setting of the show was provided by children from Warsaw music schools.. Before the spectacle the participants of the show received a cardboard tile, which they could decorate with a drawing or right a few words dedicated to Father Twardowski. From these tiles a Father Twardowski virtual tiled stove will be created which will be viewed through the Internet. At the end, children had the chance of laying flowers on the tomb of the Father-poet in the lower church of the National Shrine of God's Providence. II EDITION OF MEETINGS WITH THE FRIEND OF LADYBIRDS In the spring of 2007, in the National Shrine of God's Providence, the II round of meetings with Father Twardowski's poems took place, organised in co-operation with Wilanów Cultural Centre. The poems of Father Jan were recited by: K. Kolberger, the"Krakowskie Przedmieście" Group, J. Grałek, H.Talar, J.Zelnik, K. Majchrzak. The meeting was accompanied by an exhibition of photograms by M. Domanska presenting portraits of Father Twardowski. SONG ABOUT THE HIDDEN GOD One of the events accompanying the celebration of the Papal days was the concert entitled Song about the hidden God, which took place on 28 October, 2007 in St. Ann's Collegiate in Wilanów. The concert presented poems by the young Karol Wojtyła sung by Marcin Styczeń - artist and composer. The performance was enriched by comments from Doctor of theology Grzegorz Łęcicki. JOHN PAUL II- TEACHING WITH STRENGTH As part of the Papal Days the Institute together with the Catholic Film Club organised between 20-21 October 2007 in the Cultural Centre "Dobre Miejsce" in Bielany, a film review titled John Paul - Teaching with strength. The program contained a projection of films from the acquisitions of the International Catholic Film and Multimedia Festival in Niepokalanów, a concert by the group Trebunie-Tutki, a lecture by Zbigniew Branacha- a writer specialising in literary fact, on unknown facts connected with the assassination attempt on the Pope as well as an exhibition of reminders of the Holy Father. VII KATYŃ INTERNATIONAL MOTORCYCLE RALLY The Institute was co-organiser of the VII Katyń International Motorcycle Rally, whose aim was to make an obeisance to the victims of war crimes and reach the places where Poles were killed. The expedition route lead through the territory of Ukraine, Russia and Belarus. The participants of the rally laid wreathes and lit candles in the places of remembrance. The motorcyclists met Poles living beyond the Eastern border whom they gave souvenirs, among others, Polish books and school accessories. PROMOTION OF THE ANTHOLOGY OF " Z WIARĄ WIAR". POLACY WOBEC ŚMIERCI JANA PAWŁA II In April 2007 the Institute of Pope John Paul II issued an appeal, the intention of which was the urge to commemorate the feelings of Poles on the day of the death of the Holy Father. On 3 November, 2007 in the Wilanów Palace a grand promotion of the anthology containing works sent along, took place. In the ceremony Archbishop Kazimierz Nycz - Metropolitan of Warsaw and Cardinal Józef Glemp - Primate of Poland took part. The musical setting was provided by the Cultura Animi Foundation. The performers included: M.Lange-Banaś (flute) and R. Orłowska (piano). Selected pieces of work derived from the anthology were recited by: A. Seniuk and K. Banaszyk. REPORT 2006 Department of Education elaborates the general concept of teaching and organizes educational and cultural activity of the Institute, especially:
In 2006 the Department carried out the following projects: Photo Contest In the beginning of October 2006 a photo contest entitled Today in Bethlehem was announced. It was directed to students of Junior High and High schools carrying the name of John Paul II from the Mazovian Voivodeship. The motto of the contest was the thought taken from Papal Christmas Message of 2000: Even though the darkness may seem so deep, the stronger is the hope for the victory of the Light, which shone over Bethlehem on the Holy Night. So much good is done by people living by faith, dedicated to their daily work and family. They encourage all the others in the public domain, to respect the human rights of each and every person, to enrich solidarity between people of different cultures, to lift the debt of the poorest countries, and to conclude an honorary peace treaty between countries involved in destructive conflicts. The task of the participants was to present, with the use of photography, everyday life situations, where people, despite conditions they are in, are able to build relationships full of peace and love. It was the intention of the organizers to inspire young people to discover valuable and good things in their surroundings. Educational Curriculum according to the teaching of John Paul II Educational Department is involved it the elaboration of Educational Curriculum at High School Level. This program is addressed to high schools students. The novelty of the program at psychological and methodological level relies on the use of different sources, among others:
The program promotes universal philosophical, intellectual and moral values, essential for the discovery of the sense of human life and living according to the norms established in Christian and European culture. It is divided into three levels, adapted to a student's age. It includes systematical development of a young person's personality, his growth, physical and psychological development and his progress in understanding the surrounding world and himself. The creation of the Educational Curriculum was preceded by consultations with teachers. Its didactic construction is adjusted to curricula used in Polish schools. The translation of the subtitles to film A Piece of soul called body: The Calvary of Karol Wojtyła In cooperation with the Society of Catholic Filmmakers, the Educational Department elaborated the subtitles to film A Piece of soul called body: Calvary of Karol Wojtyła. The film, produced by Italian Television RAI Educational, presents the life of the Pope from the perspective of his physical weakness, which had been the result of his illness and elderly age. At the same time, it shows his strength and heroism accepting the suffering. The film received Grand Prix of the International Catholic Film and Multimedia Festival in Niepokalanow in 2006. The subtitles, elaborated by the Educational Department were used during the projection of the film in the Parish of Marian Fathers at Warsaw's Stegny during the celebration of the 28th anniversary of John Paul II pontificate inauguration.
Within the projects of Educational Department for 2007 the most important ones include: Participation of the Institute in the project "Ziarno" In June 1991, the TV show "Ziarno" (created and hosted by Father Wojciech Drozdowicz), was a place of a "press conference" with the participation of John Paul II. Children asked questions and the Pope, with his sense of humor, answered if he liked chewing gum Turbo or brushing his teeth or if he liked girls with ponytails etc. After thirteen years, the creators of the interview decided on the follow-up story about the participants. The film will be accompanied by archival materials from the conference and a clip to a song "Parafian Blues" recorded especially for the Pope's visit to Poland, performed by Father Wojciech Drozdowicz, Andrzej Krzywy and children from "Ziarno". Cooperation with the Society of Catholic Filmmakers Cooperation with the Society of Catholic Filmmakers, purchase of copyrights and elaboration of subtitles to films that document the life and popularize the teaching of John Paul II are planed. Every year, the International Catholic Film and Multimedia Festival receives a lot of productions devoted to the Pope. The Society administrates a large collection of films, which the Institute will be able to use, releasing copies of films that promote the teaching of John Paul II to schools. Cooperation with the Cause of Maksymilian Kolbe The Institute is planning to organize lectures in the Mazovian schools that carry the name of John Paul II. The guests are going to be Nazi concentration camps survivals. The Educational Department wishes to cooperate with the Cause of Maksymilian Kolbe and to enable the survivals of the wrongdoings of the II World War meetings with the youth. The youth that the Pope had such high hopes of for establishing civilization, based on mercy, respect of human's dignity and finding new ways of reconciliation. Preparation of an exhibition about John Paul II for schools Preparation of an exhibition devoted to John Paul II, destined for schools that carry the name of the Pope in the Mazovian Voivodeship is planned. Each of the schools will receive a package of two boards presenting crucial moments of the pontificate. Schools will be able to place them in their most representative places. Thus, they will be recognized as institutions co-creating Mazovian network of schools carrying the name of John Paul II. Elaboration of didactic materials for teachers and students Elaboration of brochures presenting chosen aspects of John Paul II teaching addressed to two groups of recipients- teachers and students in cooperation with the Editorial Department is planned. The brochures will contain photos, quotations and propositions of practical realizations of the Holy Father's teaching directed to young people. These materials will be distributed to "papal" schools in the Mazovian Voivodeship. Elaboration of a game project popularizing the knowledge about John Paul II A project of a game popularizing the teaching and important moments of the pontificate of John Paul II, in the context of historical events that were taking place in the world is being elaborated. The game will be a kind of 20th century panorama shown by the prism of the life of Karol Wojtyła. Poetical contest commemorating the anniversary of John Paul II death In connection with the second anniversary of John Paul II death the Educational Department is preparing a poetical contest entitled Bards of John Paul II. It is directed to students from "papal" schools from Mazovia. The participants are to write a ballad about the most important moments of the pontificate. The creative confrontation of the young people with the heritage of John Paul II is the main objective of the contest. Depending on the number of participants, the publication of the best ballads as an anthology is possible. Art contest celebrating Papal Day Organization of an art contest for students of primary schools, with the motto of John Paul II teaching is planned. The works will be collected, and then published in a form of an anthology. They may also be used during elaborations of calendars, postcards which will be released within the framework for Papal Day. Photographic exhibitions in the lower church of the Shrine of God's Providence Exhibitions devoted to John Paul II will be visited by students from schools that carry the name of the Holy Father. One of the exhibitions, planned during Easter will be entitled John Paul II in the photography of Wojciech Milewski.
