REPORT 2007 It is because it is a treasure chest of scripts, through which a person expresses his creative intention, intelligence, knowledge of the world and people, and also the ability to control oneself, personal sacrifice, solidarity and work for development for the common good. John Paul II, 11 June 1999 Delivered the speech during the blessing of the UW Library The Library stores teachings of John Paul II from his Pontificate, the Pope's academic work before 1978, as well as private material from the time when Wojtyła was Bishop of Cracow. 1. THE LIBRARY COLLECTION The collection of the library began from gaining the most important authorship entries of the Holy Father . Among them are : encyclicals, speeches, teachings, proclamations, and homilies. Essential items were purchased for the reference library (dictionaries, lexicons). Furthermore co-operation with the publisher of the weekly "Niedziela" was established, resulting in purchasing books making up the "Biblioteka Niedzieli" series. The Library has also accumulated: books, albums(most of the items have been donated by presenters), periodicals, documents from public life, archive materials (for example, photographs, documents) and multimedia collections. Over a dozen books were added to the library, which were purchased during the Institute representatives delegation to Mexico, regarding its history and art. 2. BOOK PURCHASES In 2007 two offers were prepared. The first one, on a prepared subject order description , had 819 order positions placed. Their realisation lasted till June. Currently work is being carried out on the subsequent offer. The subject of the realisation are 1200 books. Some of the books are purchased from warehouses or directly from the publishers. 3. DONATORS A substantial source of books are donated by institutions and individuals. In 2007 the Institute Library received 116 items as a gift from the Library of the Pauline Fathers at Jasna Góra. The Library also received, thanks to Marzena Zielonka, 450 books from Rome, donated to us by the Polish Academy of Sciences, the Papal Institute of Church Studies and the Pontifical Gregorian University. Ewa Prządka sent us 3 volumes of her book "Świadectwa" (Testimonianze). In a gift from Father Prelate Bogusław Bijak, the Library received 450 books and also numerous periodicals and documents as well as documents from social life and leaflets. The collection was enriched by many gifts from private individuals and cultural institutions. 4.THE COLLECTION IN NUMBERS From the beginning of the year we managed to collect 3115 complete volumes and 2144 volumes of continuing publications. Currently the whole library contains 6080 books. 5. PERIODICALS In 2007 the Institute Library subscribed to 59 current newspapers, magazines, journals and periodicals. Among them were: Akta Konferencji Episkopatu Polski, Bibliotekarz, Ethos, Fronda, Gazeta Wyborcza, Gość Niedzielny, Kwartalnik Filozoficzny, L'Osservatore Romano, Nasz Dziennik, Newsweek (Eng.), Newsweek(Pol.), Niedziela, Pamiętnik Literacki, Pastores, PC Word Komputer, Pedagogia Christiana, Prawo Kanoniczne, Rzeczpospolita, Niedziela. In 2007 a digitalised archive of the L'Osservatore Romano magazine, containing over 150 CDs was acquired. It contains all the publications of the magazine from 1861 to 2006 in Italian and other language editions which have successively appeared over the years. A Polish version is included from 1999. 6. OTHER ACTIVITIES Materials which are not books also find their way to the Library, for example, circumstantial posters, invitations and other documents from social life related to cultural activity. These are put in special topical files. Currently files are maintained on the following file themes: Artistic/Cards/Other published leaflets, Papal Days, Canadian material- - Polish Community Missions, Parish of God's Providence, Posters/Brochures/Folders/Invitations, Polish Community - Latin America, Polish Community- Europe, Rome, Marian Sanctuaries. Portfolios with newspaper cuttings are also maintained together with information from the Internet about the following themes: Institute of Pope John Paul II, Marian Sanctuaries, National Shrine of God's Providence. Furthermore, diverse materials regarding activities of the Parish of St. Ann in Wilanów are collected. In connection with the appearance of press materials collected by the Mexican delegation the structure of the catalogue databases were reorganised creating a contents register of periodicals. Currently work is being carried out compiling factual and technical articles appearing during the 5 pilgrimages of John Paul II to Mexico. Articles come from the following publications: El Sol de Mexico, Excelsior, El Universal, Novedades, Ovaciones, La Jornada. 7. LIBRARY ORGANISATION: Work to initiate an on-line catalogue is complete. With its help one can locate, update a list of book publications, as well as periodical and articles compiled in the Institute. The catalogue is available directly from the home page of the Institute. A lending module from the program Library MAK has been implemented. It has replaced the current, traditional method of registering borrowed books. REPORT 2006 The Library of the Institute of Pope John Paul II acquires, collects and stores books with the special attention paid to publications concerning the life, pontificate and the teaching of the Holy Father John Paul II. During the first four months of its activity, the collection reached almost three thousand books, and over two thousand six hundred volumes of continuing publications. Special attention should be paid to documents of social life, archival materials (e.g. photographs, documents) and multimedia. Foreign publications are also very important in the collection. The most important books devoted to the person of John Paul II have been purchased. The reference library (encyclopedias, dictionaries, lexicons) is being extended.
Since its establishment the library has been supported by institutions and private individuals. The first books and magazines were gifts of the duplicates from the Seminary Library of the Metropolitan Seminary in Warsaw. Precious collection was received from The Center of Research and Documentation of the Pontificate of Pope John Paul II in Rome (among others a 58- volume publication Insegnamenti di Giovanni Paolo II). Cooperation with:
has been established. Thanks to the latter, a few important books have been acquired. In addition, folders with newspapers' materials and information from the Internet portals concerning the Shrine of God's Providence and the Institute of John Paul II are currently supplemented. Materials concerning Polonia are also gathered.
The library activity is based on computer program MAK and data set, including: Bibliography of guidebooks, Bibliography of magazine contents, and Bibliography of electronic documents and Record of entries. The catalogue will be available in the Internet in the next few months. Elaboration of an electronic safety device of the Library is being planned. Plans for 2007 In 2007 further, systematical enriching of books and multimedia is planned.Cooperation with other libraries (e.g. The Library of Polish Social Cultural Center in London), archives and institutions to gather and exchange library materials as well as experiences is also planned. In 2007, the Library will be moved to its new location, therefore the purchase of modern furniture - book-shelves and other library equipment is planned.
